In the last few days, for the first time since we arrived (nearly 2 years ago now), I’ve felt a little pang of homesickness. As it gets warmer and we begin to venture out into the wide world I miss the friends that I want to hang out with. I have a couple of wonderful friends here who I can call on – I haven’t spent the last two years avoiding civilisation completely – but that doesn’t stop my brain planning things that me and X,Y and Z could do, only to realise that X.Y ans Z are not here.

At this time of year, there are usually people about to arrive at our home. People to share our wonderful Adelaide shores with. That’s not happening, at all, this year and that feels a little strange. There are no big plans at all. Obviously, we caught up with everyone only a few months ago at various weddings and so flying back to the U.K.,or them flying out here is a little much to expect and I don’t expect it… it’s just strange not having a date pinned on when I’ll see people again. There’s always been an event to plan for. The lack of a date like target, makes it feel like the gap has widened somehow.. Not sure how… I guess it has to eventually, that’s life.

It’s just strange that it has taken so long for my brain to react this way! I’ll get over it! Perhaps that is in part due to the fact that all the strange, awkward and sometimes horrible events that have happened since we’ve arrived here. The trials and tribulations of both nearly and actually losing family and friends, of stressful workplaces that have had to be left, of bit career decisions or medical situations etc. … they’re all calming down a bit.. Perhaps we’ve finally got some time to relax? Hopefully, that will mean we can moved forward even further on our journey.

This new life is still growing and developing and with each decision made comes new discoveries about the place we now call home and the people in it. Sometimes the differences between where I’ve come from and where I have arrived are so subtle that it takes a while for them to come out.. then you have to work out how to get your head around them. The deeper you go, the more you learn – it’s still an adventure.

I’m “not in Kansas anymore Toto”.

Oh yeah! Happy Meowloween!

So let’s go back to blogging about stuff what I did and stuff what I do/don’t know….

From an Expat point of view, I guess I’ve been learning a lot about the way in which the housing market seems to work here in Adelaide. The process of house hunting, making an offer, viewing a house, paying costs etc. No. We haven’t actually bought a house yet but we have managed to spend the last 4 weeks viewing properties and almost buying them… (lol). It’s a complicated business and one that’s (as usual) ever so slightly different to the U.K. – just enough to throw you a bit.

The good/bad news is that the housing market is very buoyant. There are a lot of houses on the market and they are selling pretty quickly. Well at least they are in the areas that we’ve been looking in ( Port Noarlunga / Christies Beach / Moana ). The houses are also rather expensive. The reason that we’re not looking for a house in the area we currently live in is that we can’t. We can’t afford to buy anything here. The house we are renting at the moment is probably worth in the region of 500 – 600 thousand dollars… When looking at a mortgage based on affordability and cost of living we can JUST about afford a mortgage for about 350 ( at 6.99%) with a 10% deposit. And that would make the mortgage payments (interest only) $138 more than we paying in our rental — and that make me uncomfortable. It’s worth noting that all of our very detailed and well considered sums are based upon us paying for our lifestyle on one wage. (That’s because, of course, we’ve been trying to start a family and when that happens I won’t be working).

The reason it’s more expensive it partly due, of course, to the fact that (just as it is in the UK) when you’re renting you don’t have to cover things like buildings insurance or council tax (or rates are they are called here) There are some subtle differences in how these things are calculated too. For example, when living in Birmingham and paying council <del datetime="2011-02-27T09:37:58+00:00">tax</del> rates your fee is worked out based on the area in which you live. If you are in band B you pay £90 a week for example. Here the amount you pay is worked out on a case by case basis and is calculated on the capital value of your home. SO, if you’re house is worth more, you’ll pay more tax – another reason to pay less for it!

When I asked for two fictional buildings insurance quotations (on two different homes we were considering) that turned out to be a little different too. I don’t remember the insurance policy for my building ever being affected by whether or not I had an alarm. Sure, that was taken into consideration when I was looking at the contents – but not the building itself. Then again… I guess in the UK I wasn’t being covered for floods, cyclones and tsunamis…. all of which will obviously be scared off by an alarm In all seriousness, I’m guessing that it’s to do with them having to replace windows and doors if they are damaged because you were easy pickins’. The house without alarms or security screens was going to cost $9.71 a week to insure.

The cost of actually buying a house seems to be more expensive than it was when I did it last in the UK…. and we don’t have anything to sell this tim. Stamp duty, for example, is a bit harsher too! It seems to be about 5% of the cost of the house! 5% regardless of how much you’re paying.. That makes the stamp duty on a 350,000 home 17,000. We do of course qualify for the first home owners grant of 7,000 – thank god!

and…

If you’re taking out a mortgage that is for more than 80% then you need to pay mortgage insurance. In the UK we had to do that aswell… It was £2544 a year. Here it comes to an upfront cost of $7,170.00 but that’s added to you mortgage. Here’s what the sums look like:

Currency conversion from XE.com today (27/02) 1 AUD = 0.631674 GBP)

I’ve actually never looked at these costs in pounds ( my brain is firmly processing only $s these days)… having sat and converted all of these sums I can see that the exchange rate is really not in our favour is it!! I was imagining a 350,000 house was worth £175,000. And it’s not at all! Not that, that is too helpful when looking at the costs from Adelaide and living on dollars not pounds

I have no idea what the market is currently like in the UK or what the costs might be in 2011 to buy a new home. I have heard that you now have to have a 40% deposit to purchase a home. I can get a way with 10% here so I guess we should be thankful for small helps I don’t know if the government in the UK is giving free money to first time buyers either and they are here! BONUS! but still.. it’s a bit confronting. I guess these things always are!

We haven’t made an actual offer on a property but we did get close and so the agent explained to us how we make an offer. Some agencies seem to do things differently and accept a letter of offer. (That means that others can also do the same thing and out do your offer.) This is where you make a written offer – there is definitely NO SUCH THING as a phone offer that then gets relayed back to the vendor as it does in the UK. The agent we were talking to was asking us to fill in a formal offer document ( from REISA)… pages of it. We would have had a meeting with him. Sat down and filled it in and he would then present that to vendors who would come back to us until everyone had signed it… that’s the contract… you’ve bought the home… no solicitors looking over it… It’s done in a different order. Instead of being sold subject to contract it seems that a house is sold subject to finance / buildings inspection.

The contract includes a copy of the deeds for you to view and a list of what will be sold with the property (fixtures and fittings) . These are usually the things that Amanda (our UK solicitor) looked into and took weeks to come through. Instead the agent has all of this in a folder… So quick! SOLD – and then you have to get the money. We’ve been advised to always only ever sign subject to finance as some people get themselves into a position where they sign that contract without having the mortgage finalised … then… when the mortgage is denied (for what ever reason) they’re screwed and in BIG trouble.. they have a house they can’t pay for.

With all of this in mind we’ve decided NOT to look at houses that are up for auction. To make an offer you have to have cash. You have to have the mortgage money waiting… and that doesn’t seem possible. So NO auction properties for us. We have been told numerous times that offers will only be accepted on an unconditional basis. That is just too scary for us right now!

Needless to say we’ve become a bit overwhelmed with it all. We’re looking with one eye on the property market but we know we have over 6 months left in our rental contract and rather than rushing to stop paying rent and pay towards an investment we’re going to hold off a bit. That is unless the perfect house appears and is not on for auction!

Please note that these ramblings reflect my experiences only… They are based on real life experiences and sums and our lifestyle. Please feel free to comment if you have any more information / help to offer

I think I may have solved the age old question of “Where did Summer go?”. Fear not fellow Brits! It’s hanging out with me in Adelaide at the moment. I am currently writing sat at my garden table, typing away in my summer dress, sitting next to my new out door thermometer which is telling me it’s 28°s – It’s spring. LOF is sat opposite with his top off! Not something I’m usually accustomed to in Spring!

In preparation for the beginning of summer Spring, we decided to take one more step in the direction of real Aussie Citizenship. We went BBQ hunting and successfully purchased one from a shop with THE most awesome name. How can anyone resist purchasing the new flame for the Lord of The Flame from a place called “Bonza BBQs” !

The trip to fetch this BBQ was interrupted only by a short trip to our favourite coffee supplier. We wanted to get some special blend for our fabulous coffee machine. Whilst there we were talking to our favourite “cellar door” coffee assistant and as LOF was describing his need for a stronger, more bitter taste and how that conflicted with my penchant for creamer, smoother coffees a suggestion was made that we started the interesting journey of creating our own blends from a range of “single origin” beans – SUCH A COFFEE SNOB NOW! HOW exciting!!!!!

Of course, in order to do such a thing, you need more coffee equipment. Namely, a coffee grinder. Excitedly we purchased one, along with 500g of various “single origin” beans and it wasn’t until we left the shop realising we’d somehow spend just over $400 that we both panicked! It’s a good job that we like coffee! Oh.. and Matt got a free coffee of his choice too whilst we were at it! Anyhoo. Selbucks is now able to brew you a specific blend of your favourite beans Tee hee. It’s like my tea fascination.. but with coffee. Feel free to pop round any time and get “buzzy” as we sample different blends – much more exciting that alcohol in my view!

Oh, yeah, BBQs. So… after spending nearly $1ooo dollars on appliances yesterday we put the BBQ together. LOF then, feeling much more at home, declared that things were now as they should be once more. That we had made a good choice – all this done with a special fair trade, Ethiopian, strong coffee (from Selbucks) in his hand

Steak anyone?

You would have thought that all of this shopping, and subsequent meat feast would keep LOF more than happy for the rest of the evening. However, as I was chopping salad in the kitchen and preparing the lovely red peppers capsicum for the BBQ, I heard the following in a rather angry voice. “Oi! Who told you you could have that EH? You little bastard! What the hell are you doing?!!!” Following these words was the view of a cat being flung through the patio door in my general direction as the words “You little Bastard” were repeated once more. Now, this weekend is one of the first weekends in a while where we’ve had such lovley summer spring weather, thus everyone is in their garden enjoying the sunshine and “chucking another prawn on the BarB” Matt and I are the only inhabitants of this here lovely house, so, no doubt they thought he was screaming at me until I shouted “What’s happening?” through the door too. At this point I can see one of Matt’s prize steaks on the patio floor and Hendrix looking sheepish. It would seem that, whilst his back was turned, Hendrix has managed to remove the steak from underneath it’s protective food umbrella thingy and has tried very hard to run off with it. Unfortunately, this steak was the size of his head and he had been caught in the act! On the up side he did then inherit a nice free steak for him and Stan to share!
LOL LOF, on the other hand, was not impressed!

So, I have reached the end of a short contract in a lovely school in the city. For once, I’ve been teaching my subject. In fact I’ve been teaching both of them… (Mummy Cow will know that when ever drama teaching was mentioned at Shenley I had to keep quiet about my drama teacher training… not that I minded really.) That’s not to say that it hasn’t been awesome getting back to another subject I feel really passionately about.

I have learnt so much during my short experience. There are so many things that I became really good at in England that simply do not exist in the school I was working in; I was pushed well out of my comfort zone again! Talking to other teachers, I’m pretty sure that they don’t exist – full stop- in the SA schools hereabouts. I won’t deny that it was shock when I asked for a copy of some data for my classes and I was taken down the corridor to look in a filing cabinet, where there was an individual folder for each child containing a paper copy of past reports. No pupil tracking at all; Interesting and a bit scary. Data has always been such a big part of what I do. It’s something that has been so valuable to me and to my students. For all the hoo haa over APP once I stopped seeing it as another stick to beat me with and started using it to facilitate learning and improvement in my students the world became a very well informed and empowering place. Teaching without ANY data at all was like being in the dark. I had no previous grades from lower key stages, no target grades and I was asked to give pupils a D- A grade based on how well I figured they’d met some ( in my opinion for what it’s worth) very broad and general standards.

I have had so many fantastic conversations with the fab head of English about it all. She has been so supportive and wonderful as I got my confused head around a system that isn’t constantly asking me to justify my every move. It’s been a fabulous experience. It really has and I’ve learnt as much as I’ve taught.

On a lighter note, I’ve obviously tried very hard to teach the girls to speak properly. However, they’ve also gotten their own back by refusing to give me things until I use the correct terms. You see, we don’t hand in work instead we ‘Hand up’ work. An essay and an Assignment are very different things . Apparently an assignment is something you do over a period of time and an essay is something you write under timed conditions (not sure about that one.. lol). You can’t ask for Sellotape… no idea what that is… you must instead refer to it as sticky tape. There’s no such thing as a Hoover either… that’s called a vacuum See a wealth of knowledge! Ooh and when you want to ask for sugar paper and markers to do some collaborative work ask instead for ‘butcher paper’ and ‘texters’.
I’ve also found myself letting go of the British teaching acronyms like AFL – which believe me confuses students more than anything. – … TA, HOD, APP, AO, AF etc. A TA(Teaching assistant) becomes an SSO (Student Support Officer) and APP, AO and AF?… well they don’t actually exist. A Head Teacher is a Principal (thanks Ruth for easing me in gently with that one) and a form group is a Care group instead.
There are so many subtle differences it’s untrue and I’ve had fun experiencing them all! I’ve also been blown away by students who are so independent, confident and able. Friday was a special day at school. A little like a Shenley Immersion Day, the timetable was suspended and each care group was asked to support charity. The school has pupils from R – 12 and pupils from year 5 onwards were asked to create a stall and sell something to the other students to make money for their year group charity. The students also gave rock a concert on the grass behind the main building. Now, this may not see all that extraordinary as, like I have already mentioned, we run similar activites in the UK. What did blow me away was, unlike in the UK, where to make this thing happen teachers have been having hours of meetings organising the whole thing, getting the materials for the students to create what ever it was they were doing, organising them so that they didn’t mess up, being in charge of money etc, it was ALL run by the students. Shenley’s Pastoral team should think about popping over this time next year to see how it’s done. Each year group has their own responsibilities – they are in charge – they are expected (and trusted) to do it on their own and they do!

I was attached to a care group who would be the equivalent of year 9. I had no idea how the day runs. I didn’t need to either. Two girls took over and did a presentation to the class about how the stalls would be laid out, another two printed off a roster so that each class member had a shift on the stall and time to look at the other stalls too, they warned that if you were late for your shift you would receive a text message to remind you where you should be (lol – love it) The girls had made a whole heap of jewellery and then had a nail bar. “Nails N Things” and they made a fortune! The whole school was buzzing. Little ones were walking around the stalls having their nails done, making pet rocks, buying cake (LOTS of cake) etc. It was fab and there was a special theme about “closing the gap” which is such an important thing to think about. What was most fun was that the teachers were relaxing too and able to join in. We watched the various rock bands, I had my nails done (in all the colours they had – of course). I hovered by the girls for ages thinking that was what was expected before realising that, it was Ok to just let them get on with it! Awesome!

The key things i have learnt are about balance. In the UK there is Sooo much pressure to perform with the grades, pressure on teachers – the wrong people – not students that perhaps we’ve gone a bit too far in how much we feel we need to interfer. This is a cultural thing. In the school I’ve been at I can see room for improvement in terms of expectation and challenge, There’s a lot of potential there but not at the expense of the fabulous way in which they work. I guess, what I’m trying to say, is that a balance between the UK and AUS would be amazing. That’s why I’m very excited about the opportunity ACARA is giving Aussie educators.

I’ve also realised just how valuable a of the stuff the government got us to do was (APP etc) and that perhaps the problem there is more about what it might seem to represent – another thing that makes us even more accountable for our students – another thing someone can beat me with. An App and it’s data were instrumental in making some massive changes for some very switched off kids. Perhaps, I needed to spend less time resisting it and get faster at thinking… ok… this is what we have to do… let’s make it meaningful.

Exciting times! I have soo much more to tell you… I’ll stop there though – I don’t want to get too excited and bore you lol Shop… that’s all I talk about these days… eh LOF? :p

Oh an Laney… I’ve never had sooo much fun teaching in a faith school. NOTHING like our old ‘friends’ environment at all! Full of fab, fun teachers who you’d fit in with brilliantly too

So, it would seem that things have gone a little crazy here in the ol’ southern hemisphere. By now, no doubt, you have seen the news stories about how New Zealand’s Christchurch has been hit by an earthquake. Quite rightly, probably, you didn’t hear about what was happening here in SA. To us ‘poms’ to be honest, it was just a sever October storm (think that one what happened when I was a kid in the 80s). The only difference is, we’re not really supposed to get such weather types down here in SA – or at least that’s the impression I’ve been given. At the very least, it was very obvious that the infrastructure wasn’t up to dealing with it!

42,000 of us were left without power last night as the winds raged outside. What’s really strange is that Friday, in my opinion, seemed to be a much more dramatic weather day. The storm started at about 9am – thunder, lightning – the works and didn’t end until tea time. When I got off the train after work I was watching the lightning strike over the sea. It was awesome – if a little scary. It also worked very well during a lesson I was teaching about murder mysteries (tee hee)

Yesterday’s weather was grey and windy. We lost power at about 4pm – Half way though “The Prince of Persia -Sands of Time” (worth watchin’ that!) – and it didn’t come back on until way after dark. Matt and I busied ourselves with our won little candle-lit jamborie. I called Mum and Dad to let them know that I wouldn’t be on line and that I was safe. I was convinced that Mum would see the news about New Zealand and think “oh my god are they alright!!”. Amusingly she did warn me not to go to the beach – for fear of tsunamis…. LMAO!!

Anyhoo. Last night was fun! BLACK OUT! ooooh

Today it’s quite sunny – a few rain clouds about. Nothing too interesting to report… Oh unless you count Matt’s discovery of Thebarton FOODLAND’s Butcher:

Champion of the Beefy World!

Last weekend we were invited to a BBQ at a friends house. Very cool Whilst we were there Matt was introduced to the idea of the fabled Thebarton Foodland. Now, those of you who know my lovely husband, will know that large portions of cheap meat (that tastes good) is a very important part of his spiritual being. I believe his religious denomination on face book actually reads “The Church of Beer and Steak”.

We were actually in Coles (think Sainsbury’s) when we began to hunt for some bacon. At this point I remembered the meat from the BBQ last weekend and suggested a change of store. Everything in the trolley was promptly returned to the shelves as Matt’s eye’s lit up.

Proud to be Beefy

And… boy… look what he found. That’s nearly 5 Kg (just over 11 pounds)

/ 176 ounces) of porter house steak for $24.00 (£14.25). I’ve never seen him happier. It’s taken him nearly 30 mins to cut it up into 21 steaks. He also found a large bag of Chicken breasts and chicken drumsticks (about $7s each)

I just hope he likes Beef that much!

On the way home we were joking about how the scenario might be a little different in the UK. How, if we owned one, we could chuck the whole slab of meat on the BBQ and invite Adi, Jack, John, Adam and all the other greedy meat eating beastly men around to just sit with steak knives and gobble the whole thing up. Alas, he’ll just have to do it all by himself. Poor thing!

I hope there’s not another black out… Otherwise that’s a whole lot of meat to eat in one go if it were to defrost!

This week Matt’s been off work – well he actually quit work and so didn’t really have any work to go to, as such! He starts his new job on Monday though and hopefully he’ll be much. much happier in his newer surroundings ( Cue funky annoying music). He is, as we speak, organising and copying across his research materials onto his mobile phone – remembering how he used to like his job

As a result of this impromptu holiday and the fact that it’s the beginning of term we’ve ended up spending all week together – which is lovely He’s also spent some time in the garden making new friends (as you can see in the post below) and I got to go out for a curry (first one since we got here) and meet the friends he had made at his old job as they toasted him farewell. He has some pretty cool pals from RB who will miss him (and his matrix puppets) This can be found on Matt’s face book wall.

A eulogy for the departed employee.

We haven’t done much this week really. A lot of making decisions about NAS drives and Ethernet over power adaptors (not something I think I should be encouraged to blog about) but it has been nice to chill out (and spend a fortune on Nas drives and Power line adaptors).

We did start our College course on Monday. We decided that in order to make new pals we should go and learn something new. We’ve signed up for “Therapeutic Massage for couples”. Every single person we’ve told about this (without question) and both raised an eyebrow and giggled whilst making some kind of leud comment. Well, it seemed like a good idea at the time! Free massage every Monday – awesome! And… it isn’t even remotley kinky. There are 10 couples studying together. (We only work on our own partners by the way) over half of them are over 50 and the other remaining couples are about our age.

Last Monday we worked on facial massage during which Matt almost started snoring (lol) and decided that the best way to end a relaxing facial massage was to tweak my nose and make a honking noise. It’s actually ok and not strange at all! We’re all crammed into the room and have tables we have to dress with pillows, sheets, towels etc before we start but it was good fun and very tasteful. lol

Next Monday we’re doing back massage and how to “drape” in order to preserve dignity. We’ve had to purchase massage oils and everything – oooh exciting! I’m glad we’re doing it though! We need to get out more… On that note.. I’m off to dinner with some new pals in a mo at a lovely pub called the Oxford in North Adelaide. We seem to be actually getting a life these days It’s all very promising!

We’ve been here longer than six months now. Crazy. I can’t believe how quickly that went or how much easier this has been the second time around. Perhaps, it’s been easier because there is no uncertainty, no deadline for decision making and in a lot of ways that makes it so much easier to just ‘be’, to settle and enjoy. The last 4 years have been fraught with form filling, decision making and the weight of what felt like an awful lot of enormous decisions.

It’s funny how, once you’re here – decisions’ made, it doesn’t feel like such a big deal anymore. How easy it is to forget how much has been achieved, how much you put yourself through. Perhaps it’s just my natural tendency to over think and over analyse that created the tension in the first place? All I know is that this time I’m happy. I really am.

I do miss friends and family. I get jealous of what I’m missing and then get annoyed with myself because it was, after all, my choice to move here. I feel guilty when something happens and I want to be there and can’t… Perhaps I then over compensate with Skype, Facebook, emails etc. (Sorry!) I hope that all my friends know they can call anytime and I’ll listen and give my usual brand of slightly dodgy advice!

A few days ago mum asked me whether I ever felt homesick. I wasn’t really sure how I was supposed to answer that one. I know honestly is the obvious answer but is it insulting to those you love if you genuinely don’t? I haven’t once felt like I need to be back in England, not had the urge to return to my house in Studley. I’ve never, once wanted to move back forever. I’m happy to just “be” for the moment. To be still, without the stress of form filling, packing boxes, solicitors, goodbyes and hand overs.

I’m happy to live 5 blocks from the beach with regular ducky visitors on my lawn, to see the sun everyday – even if it must rain in winter. I’m happy drinking coffee rather than beer in cafes rather than pubs. I’m happy to be able to go for long walks along the beach or in the hills. I know that I could have done more of these things in the UK. The weird thing is I never chose to. For what ever reason, the UK didn’t inspire these things in me. Maybe I’ll get bored at some point and Australia will stop inspiring me too. By that point, hopefully, I’ll be driving my kids crazy by trying to get them to appreciate what they have. We all know how ‘ungrateful’ the youth of today are It’s really nice to inspired. That’s what this place does. It gives you the space to expand (no not just with ice-cream and cakes and coffee ), to reflect and push yourself.

There’s no way I’d have been brave enough not work full time. We couldn’t afford to do that in the UK. This time we made decision to live off one wage. Future proofing for when I’d be with the babies. I have Matt to thank. It’s been hard for him to take all that responsibility and it’s weight. He’s learning things about his career and his direction too. I hope the events of the next few days help him with that a little more. I hope he gets to a comfy place, an inspired at work place – there’s certainly opportunity for him

Running a business has been different. Not as busy as I’d like and I’m finding myself being slowly being drawn ever closer to the classroom. An interesting thing. I thought I’d move away from teaching but I can see so much potential in this education system. I want need to be a part of that – Shenley has created a bug in me that needs to be fed. It will be interesting to see where I end up with that. Educational Career paths that seemed un-appealing in the UK suddenly seem very exciting here. I guess I need to get inside the door properly before I’ll know for sure. I definitely, need to get inside a classroom though.

I wonder where what we’ll be up to in another 6 months? Apart from playing host to the Clarkes (senior) and Athersmiths of course!
